Paseo Reina Sofía (popularly known as "La grieta")

La Grieta de Benamejí is one of the most outstanding geological phenomena in Andalusia, not only because of its size, but also because the phenomenon almost caused part of the village of Benamejí to disappear. This geological phenomenon of great interest has become a true emblem of the municipality.

The southern slope of Benamejí descends steeply from the town centre, which sits on a rise, down to the Genil River. Landslides on the hillside have been occurring for several centuries.

Among the various causes of the landslides on the hillside are the impact of the Genil River through its erosive activity to the south, the geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the terrain, which make these formations very fragmentary, and the presence of water in the subsoil, since the two major natural movements (1963 and 1989) occurred after intense and continuous rainfall.

Nowadays, you can enjoy a pleasant walk over its viewpoint offering magnificent views of the Castle of Gómez Arias, the Renaissance Bridge of Hernán Ruiz II, the pine trees and the undergrowth of the course of the Genil River, Aceña and the village of El Tejar, to mention just a few of the outstanding natural sites glimpsed from the viewpoint.
